The Eastern Cape High Court, Bhisho (formerly the Ciskei Division and commonly known as the Bhisho High Court) is one of the High Courts of South Africa. It sits at Bhisho and has general jurisdiction over the area of the former Ciskei.

History

In October of 1981 a High Court was established to take over the jurisdiction of the Eastern Cape Provincial Division of the Supreme Court of South Africa in the self-governing Ciskei bantustan. In December of the same year Ciskei achieved full independence (though unrecognised by any other country except South Africa), and the court became the Supreme Court of Ciskei. Initially decisions could still be appealed from the court to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of South Africa, but in 1984 an Appellate Division was established in the Supreme Court of Transkei.[1] In the same year the court moved from its original seat at Zwelitsha to new buildings in Bhisho.[2]

When Ciskei was reincorporated in South Africa on 27 April 1994, the court remained in existence, but three months later the Appellate Division was abolished and its jurisdiction transferred to the South African Appellate Division.[3] When the final Constitution came into force the remaining General Division of the Supreme Court of Ciskei became one of the High Courts of South Africa. It was known as the Ciskei Division until given its current name in 2009.
